A Vision for Pleasant Grove: Laying the Foundation for Lasting Progress

Pleasant Grove is a community rich in history, diversity, and potential, but significant challenges in governance and planning are holding the city back from achieving sustainable growth and effective management. Councilor Calhoun is committed to creating the structural reforms needed to guide the city into a future defined by transparency, efficiency, and progress. His leadership focuses on establishing necessary ordinances, building stronger communication frameworks, and implementing a comprehensive city plan that addresses both the current needs and future aspirations of Pleasant Grove’s residents.

The Need for Ordinance and By-Laws

One of the core issues facing Pleasant Grove is the absence of proper ordinances and by-laws that form the backbone of city governance. Ordinances serve as the rules and regulations that direct how the city is managed, while by-laws provide the structure for committees and boards to operate effectively. Currently, the Planning Committee, which oversees critical aspects of city development, lacks formal by-laws, leading to inefficiencies, lack of accountability, and slow decision-making on important community growth and development issues.

Councilor Calhoun believes good governance starts with clear, well-defined rules. As part of his commitment to building a stronger Pleasant Grove, he is working to draft and implement ordinances that provide clarity and accountability across all city committees. By establishing formal by-laws for the Planning Committee, he aims to ensure that decisions are made transparently, consistently, and in the best interest of the community.

The Need for a Comprehensive Plan

Pleasant Grove’s growth has been largely reactive rather than guided by a strategic vision. The city currently lacks a comprehensive plan, a critical tool that outlines long-term development goals and provides a structured approach to managing land use, transportation, public services, and economic initiatives. Without such a plan, the city risks fragmented development, missed economic opportunities, and inadequate infrastructure that fails to support a growing population.

Councilor Calhoun is determined to change that. His vision includes drafting and implementing a comprehensive city plan that reflects the community’s values and priorities while preparing for sustainable growth. This plan will guide decisions on zoning, transportation networks, housing, and public services, ensuring that development is thoughtful, sustainable, and beneficial for all residents. A well-crafted comprehensive plan will not only shape Pleasant Grove’s physical landscape but will also enhance economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life.

Where I Started

Community Contributions

USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Eric Anthony Calhoun, founder of Solutions Inc., took action to combat food insecurity in Birmingham by organizing fresh produce deliveries to residents in need. Partnering with Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales and Forestwood Farm Inc., he launched a food distribution initiative through the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box program. With support from his wife, A. Faye, and volunteers from local faith groups and schools, they successfully distributed up to 1,680 boxes of fresh produce each week. Their efforts not only provided essential food supplies but also strengthened community bonds, demonstrating the power of unity and support during difficult times.

The Crack the Egg giveaway hosted by Solutions, Inc.

Eric Anthony Calhoun proudly supported the Crack the Egg Giveaway, an inspiring initiative by Solutions, Inc. that brought much-needed relief to families facing financial hardships. With over 400 dozen eggs distributed, this event exemplified the power of community-driven efforts in addressing real needs, especially as grocery costs continue to rise. By stepping in to provide essential resources, Solutions, Inc. demonstrated the profound impact that nonprofits and dedicated leaders can have in uplifting those who need it most. This initiative not only eased financial strain but also reinforced the importance of coming together as a community to support one another during challenging times.
